No Such Thing As “Motivation”
June 7, 2015 // Wellness
Motivation isn’t real. It isn’t a thing that you magically inherit one random morning. It’s not a gift, or a stroke of luck that’s bestowed upon a select type of persons.
People don’t become motivated — instead, they create momentum.
Momentum is created through a process of small, repeated, purposeful actions. People create momentum by starting with the smallest action of a larger intention.
Creating Momentum is a process, but it’s easier than you think. It works like this:
1. Identify The Goal
2. Pick The Most Practical Solution(s)
3. Outline The Best* Action Steps
4. Focus & Commit To The Easiest Action Step
5. Stick With #4 Until It’s Too Easy, Then Add Another Action Step.
*Person-Specific
Let’s say you’re dealing with stiff joints and poor posture. You’re achy and you want to move better.
Here’s how you could create momentum to improve your physical abilities:
Goal: You wish to become more flexible
Solution: You decide taking Yoga classes would help
Action Steps: You want to start going to Yoga class, but you’re too tired after work. It’d be best to stretch at home.
Easiest Action Step: You set aside 10 minutes every morning to do 5 different yoga moves.
Creating Momentum: After 3 weeks, you’re ready to add more, so you take a weekend yoga class.
Start super small and keep adding on new elements once your actions become easy.
And just like that, you’ve created momentum.
